The Thread of a Destiny: 500 Years of History

Act I — Origins: 1550, Macé Marot and La Garaye

Manoir La Meffrais was born under the impulse of Macé Marot, builder of the Château de la Garaye. An ancestral fief of the 16th century, the estate still bears the imprint of this lineage of builders who shaped Dinan and its surroundings. Here, every stone tells the founding story of a house built to endure.

Act II — 1741: The Spirit of the Malouinières, at the Heart of the Age of Enlightenment

In the 18th century, at the height of the Enlightenment, La Meffrais embraced the elegance of the Malouinière‑inspired residences. Merchants and shipowners from Saint‑Malo found here a discreet refuge, a place for reflection and rest. A true vide‑bouteille — a small pleasure house where one could pause, refresh, and let time slow — where the art of living took center stage.

Act III — 19th Century: The Residence of a Statesman

The house later became the residence of Albert Jacquemin, Member of Parliament and Mayor of Dinan. A place of receptions, decisions, and exchanges, La Meffrais then embodied the republican elegance of the 19th century. A period during which the estate shone as much for its social role as for its architecture.

Act IV — 20th Century: The Memory of the Thread — The Capricorne Spinning Mill

La Meffrais then welcomed the Capricorne Spinning Mill, which filled the house with the rhythm of textile work. The looms, the fabrics, the materials — their presence still lingers in the walls. A heritage we continue today through our devotion to fine textiles and beautiful materials.

Act V — The Home of a Family of Connoisseurs

In the second half of the 20th century, La Meffrais became the home of a family of Breton merchants, prominent figures in high-end ready-to-wear. They infused the manor with their sense of style and passion for beautiful things.

In memory of this couple who restored the estate to its former glory, we named the former fruit store "Madeleine." It was here, protected by thick stone walls that once kept the harvests cool, that she prepared her jams. Her husband, a passionate gardener, devotedly tended the grounds we still enjoy today, where the espaliered apple trees he cared for so deeply still flourish. Today, we carry on this tradition by offering you a taste of our home-made apple juice, pressed directly from our orchard, for you to enjoy during your stay

Act VI — A Love at First Sight, A Heritage

Sometimes, it is the houses that choose their guardians.

It was somewhat by chance—and very much by destiny—that we crossed paths with La Meffrais. As the daughter of a high-end household linen specialist from Picardy, the historic cradle of textile manufacturing, I found here an intimate echo of my own roots. The thread of history was weaving itself into the thread of my life.

Together with Philippe, we are dedicated to continuing this story by blending it with our passion for beautiful things. Once home to the "Filature du Capricorne" (The Capricorn Spinning Mill), La Meffrais is now reconnecting with its vocation for simplicity and excellence. Each room has been restored as a sanctuary of softness, where linen, cotton percale, and the serenity of the park compose a timeless experience.
